My 1999 Wanderings

Second Mountain Rd.

We have been wanting to take this trail for some time since it is so close to our basecamp. We have heard several good stories about it including an Article in FourWheeler Magazine.

Go straight here

and you will see this gate.

The trail goes along with plenty of cross cuts to reduce errosion.

As it was late and hurricane Dennis was coming in we made camp a little before dark.

We set up a big tarp between the vehicles facing in opposite directions. Even before we finished setting up Dennis was already pouring down upon us.

Later we built a fire just beyond the edge of the tarp and set up our bedrolls in between the two vehicles.

After dinner we sat back and watched SNAKE EYES w/ Nicholos Cage on DVD.

The next morning we packed up and ventured back to the trail.

We each took a few minutes to play in the new lake Dennis had left for us.

But with more weather coming and since the buggy had sustained some minor damage from scrapping on the crosscut hills we left the rest of Second Mountain Road for the summer of Y2K.
We actually did not make it back until May of 2001.

Fire Road 101

I followed FR101 checking each trail head for access and found that ALL of these trailheads were closed to vehicular traffic. There were a few hiker/horse trails which we are not allowed to access. There was also one dirt road leading back to a lake and the dirt berm made to close off the trail marked on the map.

Fire Road 85

My first stop was to climb this hill which we had found the year before but unfortunately I was a passanger as my XJ was in the shop.

I took a couple of pics and drove on.

Later in the day I found this trail which split off in opposite directions. I plan on going back and exploring one or the other in 2K

Then later I found this trail.

Late in the afternoon I found a bit of a diversion parallelling the dirt road I had been on. Since I had not had any rough trail or mud to this point, when I came upon this tree accross the trail I decided to do some honest work.

So, I hooked up my come-a-long and drug it out of my way.
